Açungui River
The Açungui River is considered the last great natural reservoir of clean water supplying Curitiba and its metropolitan area. The Mountaineer's Natural Reserve protects 3 km of its banks plus another 2 km of the Palmital River, sheltering around 30 springs.

Ribeira watershed, transition between plateaus
The Natural Reserve is part of the Ribeira River watershed, in a transition region between the First and Second Plateau of Paraná, within the domains of the Devonian Escarpment — one of southern Brazil's most singular landscapes. The waters that flow from here are the waters that serve millions of people downstream.
Riparian forest and springs
Protecting the springs and the riparian forest is a permanent priority. The vegetation along the river filters the water, regulates temperature, shelters aquatic and terrestrial wildlife and prevents silting. Without riparian forest, there is no clean river — and without clean rivers there is no Natural Reserve, no city, no agriculture.
Water capture inside the Natural Reserve
The Natural Reserve headquarters is supplied by a "caxambu" water-capture system, built over a spring with five water eyes. Water is stored in a 10,000-liter reservoir at the top of the hill — supplying every building in the Natural Reserve without depending on a well or external supply.
